To avoid people just up-voting because it's "cool" and resulting in non-essential features, allow for "types" of votes like: "I need this" or "I want this" or "This is cool"

Agreed. As an ex software engineer/architect I would have loved the feature to up and down vote a request. It would help the product's team decide what is really needed. Honestly, I find myself upvoting because it's "cool"!

Limiting users votes to 3 (or 4,5... whatever) requests would even be better. It would force users to prioritize. Of course, this might be more work and users may hate it.

This might solve my need for priorities. Or give people a limited number of votes (like Uservoice does) and allow them to assign all or some votes to specific tasks.

Yeah it'd definitely be nice to have a little more depth to votes. This one is similar to https://feedback.canny.io/feature-requests/p/allow-customers-to-pre-pay-for-features (we will pre-pay X for the feature!)
