Convert Comments when Merged

We merge a significant amount of our posts. A lot of them have a substantial comment history (we may not catch the duplicates right away). It'd be great to represent not just the post in the UI but the comments as well.

Merging posts should increase the comment count

It appears that merging posts does not increase the comment count. Ideally, the count should be increased by the original merged post plus any comments on the merged post.

Thank you for posting, Juniper Halibut! I have a few more questions for you:
- Can you provide an example of a situation where the current comment count after merging posts caused confusion or problems?
- How often do you merge posts and what is the average number of comments on the posts you merge?
- Are there any other aspects of post merging that you think could be improved?

Hi Sarah Hum,
- We are using votes and comments as a proxy for popularity. The confusion comes from merged posts not increasing the count.
- Currently (new client), we are using merge to get comments from an existing tool, so we are using it a lot. If we could comment on behalf of a user (I have suggested this), then this would not be so important.
- The only other issue we have encountered is 'ghost posts' in the search results when searching for the post to merge. This may also be a function of us being new, importing, and deleting issues!

Hi Juniper Halibut, just following up on this. The comment count should go up when merging two posts. I just tested this myself so I wonder if you're running into a bug. Are you still seeing this happening?

Hi Sarah Hum, I haven't had occasion to merge posts recently but I can see from the historical ones that it was definitely an issue. e.g. this post has 6 merged posts but a count of 2:

Hey Drew, when you merge a post, we move all of its votes and comments over to the other post. Does this solve your problem?

Hey Andrew Rasmussen: I meant some way of representing those comments in the UI, in the post itself. From a users point of view, those comments are erased upon merge.

Per our conversation, comments don't get erased, but moved over to the other post. I'm going to close this one out. 🙂
