Downvoting

Allow downvoting in Canny so users can also add negative votes. This would help for highly-engaged communities and give a voice for people to voice things they specifically DON'T want to see.

I think "downvoting" is an especially useful corrective when the devs see a feature with a lot of "double plus good" upvotes, and begin to think it is "popular" and they "need to implement it." It really is a useful way to provide feedback on what really does not work for constituencies and use cases of a product. It is dismissed by devs often as "too negative" but then, they need to manage their products to incorporate genuine user experiences.

Like JIRA, which had the capacity in principle for downvotes and clients generally didn't use them, Canny definitely needs to add this capacity. It's vital for liberal democratic communities online. Canny is now used in Second Life which is an improvement over the wonkiness of JIRA, at least in that instance, but you can't downvote, you can only add a comment. We really need to come out of the era of doubleplusgood geeky thinking and have a more normal type of up-and-down yes/no vote on issues on these services.

This would be great for requests like "Make feature X work the same way it did before!" These requests always get traction, but there is no way to see all the users who like the new method.

If adding this I would suggest to
– allow admins to deactivate this downvote feature in general for all posts
– allow admins to deactivate this downvote feature

This one is of great importance when the tool ends up being used in a larger community context, as one bad feature request with a lot of upvotes can
appear
to be very popular, only because you cannot see all the downvotes at all.It seems that the way Canny currently intends itself to be used, is that everyone who didn't vote on a ticket is considered a downvote? i.e., every one of the millions of users using an application has read every single ticket in order to choose which ones to upvote? Sounds like a wild assumption to me.

There are some posts I disagree with and would like to down vote them. It would be more balanced to see who agrees and who doesn't

I'm getting requests for a suggestion tool that supports downvoting too. It'd be nice to have it as a per-board option: Allow Downvotes

Downvoting is obviously a contentious topic. That said, several competitors off that feature and it is one that my company has expressed interest in having. Seems like a configurable option would satisfy the masses.

If this was to be done, both upvotes and downvotes would need to be accounted for, otherwise there is obvious risk of attention loss for important topics.
